In the Basque region of Northern Spain there is a long standing tradition of Gastronomic Societies, known locally as a ‘Txoko’, where men meet to cook and share their passion fine food and drink.
In the 1970’s one small group of friends formed a Gastronomic society in the small town of Ollauri. However, unsatisfied with purchasing wine from neighbouring wineries they decided make their own to complement their culinary prowess.
The result was Bodegas Beronia – named after the Berones, a warring Celtic tribe who inhabited the area in the 3rd Century BC .
With Gonzalez Byass since 1982, this multi-award winning winery is today recognised as one of the finest Rioja brands in Spain.
The winery nestles in the foothills of Mendiguerra, in Rioja Alta. Surrounded by the Sierra de Cantabria to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda to the south, Atlantic influences and clay soils with a high chalk content combine to give perfect growing conditions.
Following the traditional Txoko and continuing with our founder’s passion we’re bringing together good friends with the perfect marriage of good food and fine wine with Beronia Txoko events. These jovial affairs showcase what is quintessentially Rioja whilst giving people the opportunity to create their very own Basque culinary delights.
