On 21st September, renowned sommelier and hotelier, Gérard Basset MW MS joined Gonzalez Byass winemaker, Antonio Flores, to select the 2016 edition of Tio Pepe Las Palmas in Jerez.
The Palmas range is made up of four rare, barrel-selected Fino and amontillado sherries, all bottled “en rama” without filtration or clarification. For almost two centuries, Gonzalez Byass has used the palma chalk mark system to classify its highest quality Finos based on their age and finesse. The youngest of these exceptional wines is given una palma while the older and rarer casks are given up to cuatro palmas.
On the day of selection, Antonio Flores and Gérard Basset tasted through over 100 wines at the bodega to choose the optimum barrels for this year’s edition.
Commenting on the tasting Basset said, “It seems easy to select barrels but when confronted with so many that taste so superbly, and with such different characteristics it is not so obvious. At the end you have to follow your gut feeling.” He continued, “It was a very humbling experience to select alongside the Master Antonio Flores Pedregosa. It was difficult but very exciting, Antonio and Pedro Rebuelta made it easy and fun for me. I really enjoyed the experience and I cherish the opportunity they gave me. I really hope will be happy with the end result!”
